ACLU strikes my town

It was announced today that Judge Lamz ruled to leave the picture hanging and is prepared to take it to the Supreme Court. There's been an outpouring of donations from residents so the city won't have to pay for it. We may very well lose based on the erroneous "separation of church and state" judgment but we won't go down without a fight.

ACLU tells Slidell court to remove picture of Jesus

SLIDELL -- A painting of Christ, with a sign reading "To know peace, obey these laws," has no place in Slidell City Court, the Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union says.

Unless the picture and plaque are removed within a week, the ACLU may sue on behalf of a person who filed a written complaint with the group, the organization said.

The display has been up for years without anyone complaining to the court, Slidell City Court Judge Jim Lamz said in a statement issued through court spokeswoman Ann Barks.

"I'm disappointed the ACLU released their letter to the press either before or simultaneously to us, which indicates they're not interested so much in a resolution, but in confrontation and publicity," he said.

Joe Cook, executive director of the Louisiana ACLU, said the group has received several complaints, one of them written.

"As an admonition hanging in a court of law, it clearly gives the impression that only believers in the law of Jesus Christ will receive justice in that courthouse," said Katie Schwartzmann, the ACLU attorney who wrote the letter.

Re: ACLU strikes my town

While I like you Mrs. M and mean no disrespect I support the ACLU and hope they win. I have absolutely no problem with religious material on private property but do not think that places that are funded with tax money should be used as a forum for religious material.

I understand, however, I've never supported the decision made regarding the First Amendment.
It's funny, though, that no one complained until all them damn foreigners (people from out of state or city ) came here!

I respect local autonomy in most cases. However, I would hardly call a display in a public building individual speech so much as promotion of what is displayed. Can just anybody put something up on display?

Do we know much about who made the complaint? I would assume they are a resident of Slidell.

Nah, it's inside the courthouse so the guards would stop anyone from putting anything on the walls.

Re: ACLU strikes my town

If they would actually go around and protect rights instead of attacking freedom of religion vs church and state.................

the ACLU would be a worthy organization , from gay boyscouts, to this type of stuff or religious symbolism in city seals, to a picture...........wow

I really make sure that I respect beliefs but I grew up and still live in a area in which things like this go on and are never challenged. I hate that I could never dream of putting a pro atheist poster or monument up in a public building but I have to see posters of the ten commandments and hear prayers and public services such as graduations from time to time and really just have to ignore it. I'm am more than willing to accept a lack of endorsement of my beliefs (or lack of) and I wonder why it is treated so radical to expect the same of other beliefs. It sucks being in the minority some times.

Actually they do a lot of that kind of work. It just isn't what people focus on because it isn't as controversial.

Re: ACLU strikes my town

How soon they forget.
The ACLU was the main supporter of Comedian Rush Limbaugh when the prosecutors wanted to search his medical records.
But, of course, to attack them for this; the past must be conveniently dismissed.

There is no place for a painting of Jesus in this courthouse.
Except for maybe as an excuse that any verdict handed down by the court is irrelevant - Only God has the authority to judge. And until He does so, I am innocent!
Now what Party by and large would use such a defense?

Re: ACLU strikes my town

The ACLU needs to focus on something a little more important and relevant as this.

So, because Limbaugh is despised, his medical records are fair game?
I don't give a rats' ass about this blowbag, but privacy trumps all.
Limbaugh is not the issue.

Without the ACLU, this country would be in much poorer shape.
You know their victories - excluding homosexual/religious - just as well as I do.

Do I agree with all their positions? - NO.
But one must take the good with the bad.

EDIT-
2-fingered typing foils me yet again.
Partofme provided the info you requested.
The question is - will you view it?

Naturally the media will focus on controversy because that gets ratings but that is not what you said. Maybe you should be a little more clear. So do you think the media's coverage of political organizations is always balanced?
