Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet
Indeed, I'm dubious of life as well though I don't think it's a stretch, especially with their belief that it might have water. I have a open mind. We've been wrong about a planet/planetoid before, and after all this is only universe we have to work with. With this being considered Earth-like because its the closest thing we've got so far. Indeed, the scientist only see this as a step forward, not the end of discovery.

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet
Why? Do you believe in the fundamental uniqueness of Earth life, or is it for scientific reasons?

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet
But were doomed!!!! WHY??? CAUSE GOD MADE MISTAKES!!!! Why did he allow Hitler to come into our world? Why did he allow Arabs in as well? Why didnt God just Flood the Middle east or sink it into the bottom of the ocean like he did to atlantis? Here the only thing GOD did right,, THE DESTRUCTION OF ROME!! Who knows what that roman empire might had done if it still excisted today? GOD Is ruining this planet cause hes still allowing Arabs run like wild luntic human beings who kill people by the dozens!!! And Killing themselves as well. If GOD is real i want him do this to saudi arabia and IRAN
Along with an 9.4 Earthquake Now explain why GOD wants Bin Laden and Al Queda still breathing and operating? |

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet
Steveox, can't you just create a thread in off-topic and use it as a blog for your posts? By spreading them out all over the board, you drag the discussion quality down in many places rather than making it absolutely atrocious in just one.

I agree that with the vastness of space that it is not only unlikely that we are unique, but improbable. However - life is extremely rare...extremely. The number and mixtures of numerous properties, energies, temperatures, chemistry ANND all not only have to come together, but stay together for billions of years so that life can evolve into a meaningful form (even if that form is not much beyond amoeba) ANNND you find it at that truly brief moment, in cosmic time, when the planet had the window of life on it. The chances therefore (IMO) of finding life outside of earth would be a mathematical miracle. |

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet
I agree, I changed my sentiments, and didn't exactly mean to say that life doesn't exist anywhere else but that I'm dubious until proven so. Still, what this discovery does more than anything is prove that Earth isn't a glitch. Which is a very good start. Not that I'm suggesting that this is the ultimate find, it isn't, I'm sure there are even better planets but this is something new. Nor am I suggesting that before now did such planets not exist just because we didn't discover them, they have, its just now we have some sort of proof. Whether life exist is a big big big maybe, but its better than what we've ever had before.

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet
On a very sad and distressing note congress has all but quashed the Terrestrial Planet Finder Mission. That really bites since this is the kind of candidates it would have targeted....

As for NASA; blame the Democrats, they were the ones whom reduced funding.
